Makati takes the lead in ICT-integrated education with Genyo

AS ONE of the premiere cities in Metro Manila, Makati envisions to lead the country into the 21st century globalized world by always staying at the forefront of breakthrough technologies.

Consistent with its mission to provide world-class service to its citizens, Makati has embarked on a revolutionary educational program for its entire city schools—the Genyo eLearning Program. Effective SY13-14, three schools have been chosen for the pilot program, namely: Jose Magsaysay Elementary School, Makati Elementary School, and Makati High School.

Launched in June 2013 through the efforts of Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay Jr., Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Dominico Idanan, and Jose Maria T. Policarpio, DigiLearn President, Makati teachers and students from the pilot schools have been enjoying the benefits of Genyo in their teaching and learning processes.

Genyo is a learning management system for delivering, tracking and managing lessons and academic performance. It provides curriculum-based content on English, Science, Math, Filipino and Araling Panlipunan in a medium highly appropriate for the learners of today—digital, fun, and interactive. Its comprehensive and interactive content makes teaching and learning more fun and convenient, both for teachers and for learners as well.

Believing that teachers are the main driver of success for the program, the Genyo eLearning solution comes with an intensive teacher training program on integrating ICT n the classroom. Onsite consultants, also known as Learning Integration Specialists (LIS) are assigned to each campus to ensure that teachers have an access to an expert to help them use the Genyo resource. Access and connectivity is an essential ingredient for the success of the program. Genyo comes with a proprietary data-server installed in the school. A wi-fi local area network (LAN) infrastructure is also installed in the computer lab to ensure continued access to the content by teachers and students.

A demo teaching on how ICT is integrated in the classroom was held last September 17, 2013 at the Makati Elementary School. (MES). Ms. Eloisa Lagrimas, an English teacher from MES, demonstrated how she integrates ICT in the classroom with the aid of Genyo. Among those who witnessed the demo teaching were DepED – Makati Superintendent Dr. Dominico Idanan, Division of Makati - ICT Coordinator Eden Samadan, host school principal Mr. Allan Arcilla, and principals and teachers from different public schools in Makati. After the demo teaching, the educators shared insights and feedback during the post conference. Educators discussed the challenges they have been facing with regards to implementing ICT in their respective schools and classrooms. And with everybody’s active participation, they have been able to formulate suggested solutions. More than being a day of sharing best practices, the event challenged and inspired Makati educators to break down traditional methods of learning and use technology to explore new ones.
